Injector Spray Types:
Pictured below is the earliest and the most common tapered pintle design that was used in most injector designs in the 70's thru the 80's. The pintle is tapered with a mushroom shaped tip causing the spray to diverge as it leaves the injector tip as seen in the diagram below. Note: the pintle cap was removed for this picture.
This type of injector has a plate below the pintle with 1 small single hole. this produces a very narrow spray.
Due to new strict emission laws and requirements. The Automakers have put smaller and more holes in the injectors to help automise the fuel especially when first stating the car or if it is cold. the example below has 10 holes in the diffuser plate but 2, 4 etc. do exist.
There are many different types of spray patterns. Each type is designed for a specific type of system and changing types may or may not improve. Installing a pattern with a wide 'V' pattern over the single narrow spray type may result in the fuel missing the intake valves and so it is best to stick with the manufacturer's type that was first installed to suit the motor vehicle.
